Science = Progress, Stories = Meaning - Issue 32 - 23rd October 2022
With technological advancement and enlightenment came immense strides forwards for humanity: living longer, less poverty and starvation, fairer societies etc. However, the consequence of this progress has been poorer mental health, especially in Western, first-world countries.
The truth of meaning lies in thefundamentality of the stories that move us
Whilst we mustn’t attribute causation and correlation without rigorous scientific investigation, it seems to me and many others that another consequences of scientific revolution is a decline in meaning. Religions, myths and stories provide meaning for people but science is objective and cold.
Science provides us with the tools to solve a great many problems however it cannot solve a lack of meaning in people’s lives, that comes from subjectivity and emotions, the opposition of science. Therefore, we must uncover these stories again, study them, meditate on them and apply them to our lives so that we can live harmoniously with meaning as well as scientific progress. The truth of meaning lies in the fundamentality of the stories that move us. We just need to question why.

Album I Enjoyed - The Car by Arctic Monkeys
Although many fans are yearning for Arctic Monkeys to make another record similar to their critically acclaimed album AM, their latest two albums are still enjoyable in a different way. More poetic, thematic and experimental, The Car is definitely worth a listen from start to finish.
