Productive Habit-Forming - Issue 59 - 30th April 2023
It is vital that you put all of yourself into this project of being more productive as you will fail otherwise. When people attempt to lose weight they find a temporary strategy to do so and then once they reach their target weight, revert back to their old ways. It’s the same with all important projects in your life, including life itself. When we set goals without drastically changing our lifestyles, those goals will never be achieved.
I’d rather feel guilty for days off and be productive than feel guilty for never working and being unproductive
Therefore, we must commit to ourselves. We must change our whole lifestyles so that it becomes increasingly difficult for us not to be productive. This requires a few weeks of hard labour as those first few weeks of gruel will be difficult but once habits are formed, you’ll find it difficult to revert back to old, unproductive ways. Take exercise for example. When we start exercising after years of stillness, we find it painful. However, once you’ve been exercising for a few weeks, the pain lessens and you find it more painful when you don’t exercise. Now apply this to all of the habits you wish to insert into your life.
Of course, this way of life has its drawbacks. For instance, I gave myself a day off yesterday and continually felt guilty and weak for doing so but forcing yourself to rest is a requirement every now and again. I’d rather feel guilty for days off and be productive than feel guilty for never working and being unproductive.
