Suffering & Limitation - Issue 22 - 14th August
It’s vital that we accept our limitations and take action to become better instead of decrying our own bad luck and misfortune. The world can be a cruel place. We can be very unlucky, but to accept this fate and work is to accept the way of the world. In the movie Bruce Almighty, a man feels that God punishes him, that he is incredibly unlucky and cries out for answers from God. He then meets God and God gives Bruce his job. Bruce must do God’s work. At first Bruce answers everyone’s prayers and chaos emerges. Everyone wins the lottery, loses weight without trying etc. and riots erupt. It’s this symbolism that portrays what the world would be like if everyone got what they wanted without working for it or deserving it. We should not want to get everything we want because our limitations literally give us something to do. Without them, we’d be bored and complacent. If we were all lucky, no one would be. Further, if given the power of God, would we choose to be selfish and provide ourselves with all that we desire? Maybe, but what would follow is depression. We need limitations and obstacles to overcome otherwise what are we doing here ? Why do we bother? We need something to do. It’s why we hear endless stories of lottery winners who tumble into a pit of depression; they were given everything they could ever want and had nothing to overcome.
Perhaps it’s that if we all won thelottery, if we were all rich beyond our wildest dreams, if there was no obstacles to overcome, no failures, no vulnerabilities, no limitations, we’d all perish amongst the chaos of the result
We like to decry religion and the idea of God by citing endless amounts of suffering in the world: the holocaust, 9/11, genocide etc. These are fair questions to pose: why would an all-good God create such misery and suffering? Perhaps it’s because the level of suffering and misery that would erupt if we all got what we wanted would be even more catastrophic. Perhaps it’s that if we all won the lottery, if we were all rich beyond our wildest dreams, if there was no obstacles to overcome, no failures, no vulnerabilities, no limitations, we’d all perish amongst the chaos of the result. Theworld must have chaos, horror, suffering and misery, whether God put it there or not, because the world needs limitations. The answer to life’s suffering and the place to find meaning in life is where we least want to look and theacceptance of the world’s horrific suffering is certainly the last place I want to look.
So, the argument that many devout atheists make: “if God existed, why would he inflict so much suffering?” is simply questioning why the world has suffering within it. Either way, the world has suffering so accepting that is one step closer to meaning because you will encounter suffering and if you do as Bruce did and cry out to God, blaming him for your “bad luck” the world turns dark pretty fast. However, if you voluntarily bear it, you find meaningand purpose.

Documentary I’m Pondering - What is a Woman?
“Political commentator Matt Walsh explores the changing concepts of sex and gender in the digital age, particularly the transgender rights movement, transphobia, and what it means to be a woman.”
Firstly, there are many issues concerning gender identity that I question and am curious about such as the possible biological advantages of trans-athletes, surgeries and drug administration from doctors to children as young as ten years old as well as the significance of biological sex with regards to children’s, women’s, men’s and trans rights. There are also many arguments made throughout the documentary that I disagree with however, thedocumentary is an effective investigation into the modern society of gender identity and culture. One in which even questioning mainstream narratives of gender identity is seen as bigotry.

Restaurant I Loved - Ting Thai Caravan
I visited this place whilst exploring the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We were searching for a place for easy take-away food and it did not disappoint. “Ting and Ae Tapparat first fired up their woks at the Edinburgh Festival in 2012 offering authentic Thai street food to the festival masses.”
If you’re visiting Edinburgh, it’s definitely a must.

This is a remarkably easy recipe to make but is extremely delicious. As thename suggests, it has a small ingredient list but each one compliments thenext beautifully. Definitely a crowd-pleasing starter or it can easily be expanded to a main course salad.
