Sacrifice The Conventional - Issue 50 - 26th February 2023
When we sacrifice what we truly cherish, meaning is uncovered. By sacrificing our sense of moral systems, we know what is right and what is wrong. When we sacrifice conventional forms of success and fortune, you will be rich. When we sacrifice hope, faith and ideology, we become wise and fulfilled.
Throw away holiness and wisdom, and people will be a hundred times happier, throw away morality and justice, and people will do theright thing. Throw away industry and profit, and there won’t be any thieves. If these aren’t enough, just stay at the center of thecircle and let all things take their course - Lao Tzu
We must sacrifice what the majority value because the majority are severely mistaken. What a strongly materialist, capitalist society has brought is notions of individualist values and competition in order to spur profit. Our values are derived by profit-driven corporations. We are implicitly told that we must be prettier, richer and happier than those we see online and the best way to do that is money, attention and fame. We are told that what matters is outside of ourselves, within the material. However, when we only concern ourselves with the material, we suffer. This is not a glitch in the system, this is the system. We are told to be prettier, richer and happier and thus spend our time, attention and money on products corporations claim to be the answer and when we inevitably fail to live up to these standards, we become depressed and when we’re depressed, the profit-driven corporations step in with products that will make us prettier, richer and happier and the cycle repeats. Our innate human-needs will never be met by the external. We must look within to find fulfilment.
When we only worry about what we wear, what we drive, where we live and how much money we have in our bank accounts, we are destined for mental sickness. However, when we throw away all notions of materialist concerns, we are free. We remain in the centre of the circle, unaffected by the values of others. We have no values, therefore we are free.
