Fulfilment Through Welcoming - Issue 49 - 19th February 2023
“Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself? The Master doesn’t seek fulfilment. Not seeking, not expecting, she is present, and can welcome all things.” This is a quote from one of the best books ever written, The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. It was written hundreds of years ago and it is an immortal piece of literature due to its profound themes that are applicable to every situation, at any time.
If we welcome all aspects of life, the horror and the beauty, we find fulfilment by default
We must sacrifice the search. This sounds counterintuitive, given that we are often told that we must have a goal, have a drive to be better than before and that if we had a goal, everything would turn out peachy. The problem with this train of thought is that life is never peachy for long, so as much as we should cherish those fleeting moments of ‘peachyness,’ we should also be truly aware of the nature of life and all of its unpredictability. Yes we should have a direction, a place to aim at but we should never expect life to be perfect. Therefore, we must ensure that what we are aiming at is worthy of our time rather than a target that we’ll never hit. Having a goal and accepting life for what it is are not two exclusive ideas, but rather two ideas that can contribute to each other. By accepting all of the aspects of life, both positive and negative, we ensure that our goals are worthy and by having a worthy goal, we make the world a more meaningful place.
Lao Tzu further instructs us not to rush. Anything meaningful cannot be accomplished quickly. So, we must have the patience to wait for meaning to show itself, as it will with time. We mustn’t expect fulfilment or happiness whenever we want it, we must welcome all aspects of experience: pain, suffering, surprises, rudeness, excitement, emergencies etc. For if we welcome all aspects of life, the horror and the beauty, we find fulfilment by default.

Recipe I’m In Love With - Mob’s Marmite Chicken
Whether you love marmite or hate it, I’m sure you’ll love this recipe as themarmite taste is subtle but the dish as a whole is incredible. Although I made a mess with the corn flour, I’d still say it is a fairly straight forward recipe which packs a punch. I served the chicken with quinoa and vegetables as a healthier substitute for white rice.

Another Recipe I Make Often - Turkey Bolognaise by BBC Good Food
I’ve made this recipe often as it tastes incredible, is fairly cheap and is very useful for meal prepping as, although it states that it serves four, it serves three for dinner, with a few leftover for lunches through the week. I also add a few ingredients to the cheesy pasta part with the help of Anthony Bourdain’s Macaroni Cheese recipe, such as Worcester Sauce, mustard and paprika.
