The Struggle To Be The Best - Issue 16 - 3rd July 2022
There is a small minority that, even though some don’t know they’re doing it, embrace struggle and progress further than the majority and achieve success and fulfilment.
The year is 1978, a sophomore student tried out for the varsity basketball team at Laney High School. When the list of players was posted, his name was not on it, he was instead asked to play on the junior team. He was told that he did not have enough talent and had not proven himself as an outstanding basketball player. The 15-year-old student was heartbroken by this crushing blow and cried in his room, convinced that he should give thesport up until his mother convinced him otherwise. Instead of letting this unexpected struggle defeat him, he played on the junior team and worked on his game relentlessly. The student later said:
Whenever I was working out and got tired and figured I ought to stop, I’d close my eyes and see that list in thelocker room without my name on it, and that usually got me going again
This relentless drive curated from failure, defeat and struggle followed thestudent throughout university and eventually into the NBA. Embracing thestruggle of defeat and failure led him to break various records and to become the most decorated player in the history of the NBA. Michael Jordan, thegreatest basketball player in history said
I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed

Band I Just Seen Live for the Fifth Time - Kings of Leon
There’s a reason I’ve seen these guys live so many times aside from the fact that they’re my favourite band: their live performances are faultless, from the sound to the vocals and this time was no different. Although I was quite frustrated that Caleb Followill (lead vocals) was forced to stop theperformance twice because there was fighting in the crowd, however they professionally carried on and still gave us an incredible performance.
I would highly recommended seeing these guys live, even just for their musicianship.
In the meantime, check out their live performance in Rotterdam in 2016 below.
Restaurant I Loved - L’Escargot Bleu
I ate here on Friday after a few recommendations and it did not disappoint. The decor is unequivocally French, the staff were perfect and thefood was beautiful. Grilled snails in garlic butter and chorizo, the beef bourguignon and the crême brûlée were all exquisite. I’d highly recommended this place.
Here’s a short description: “We’ve been serving classic French dishes at l’escargot bleu on Broughton Street for thirteen years. From bonjour to au revoir, we offer true hospitality in a charming environment, so you can enjoy the wonderful conviviality of eating out. Our sourcing ethos and cooking techniques affirm our dedication to real food with no shortcuts.”

Book I Loved - What The Buddha Taught by Walpola Rahula
This was a short read I used to research for a project I’m working on and it does exactly what it says on thetin. It explains and explores thevarious core tenets and stories of Buddhism in a comprehensible but thoughtful way. There’s a lot of useful and actionable advice throughout that would benefit anyone, so I’d recommended give it a read.

Quote to Ponder
First, seek out dissenting opinions. Always try to find people who disagree with you, who can honestly and productively play devil's advocate. Challenge yourself to truly listen to people who have differing ideas and opinions than you do. Stay out of political bubbles and echo chambers as much as possible. Feel good about really hearing those who disagree with you. Try to change your mind about one thing every day. The fact is that when two extreme opinions meet, thetruth lies generally somewhere in the middle. Without exposure to the other side, you will naturally drift toward the extremes and away from the truth of the matter. Don't be afraid of being wrong. Because being wrong is just an opportunity to find more of thetruth. Second, stay flexible and be open to opportunities as they come your way. Most of thesuccessful people I know did not know exactly what they wanted to do coming right out of college, and they changed their focus over the course of their careers. Be open to what the world brings your way. Don't be afraid to change jobs or careers, no matter how much time you have already put into something. There is no urgency to have it all figured out. And feeling like you have it all figured out can make you stuck and close-minded to change - Annie Duke
