Failure Breeds Success - Issue 17 - 10th July 2022
The year is 1985, less than ten years after Steve Jobs founded Apple, he was fired. Right in the prime of his success at the ripe age of thirty, Jobs was forced to resign by the then CEO Jon Sculley. It would take nearly 12 years before Jobs came back to the company that he started. Shortly after returning in 1997, Jobs took Apple into the stratosphere and completely revolutionized personal computers, handheld technology and the way we consume information. We know Jobs today as one of the titans of tech, a giant of Silicon Valley and a legend of the business. To the majority of us, a failure like this would cause a slow decline into self-pity, chaos and destruction, but not Steve Jobs. During his time away from Apple, he founded the company NeXT which developed computer workstations and funded Pixar Studios contributing to its exponential growth.
Jobs later said:
I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me
Instead of wallowing in self-pity, Jobs turned this “failure” into opportunity by helping two organisations grow and re-inventing himself by taking thelessons he learned from setbacks and growing professionally and personally. He made amends with relationships in his personal life and remarried. Of course, we all know what happened when Steve Jobs returned to Apple after this re-birth; the iPhone was born.

Bookshop I Visited - Typewronger Books
I love bookshops, especially if there’s some first editions and antiques hiding in them. “Typewronger Books is Edinburgh's smallest bookshop and Scotland's only typewriter repair shop. We sell new books, independent publications and zines.”
This place is definitely worth a visit if visiting or living in Edinburgh.
Have a look below.
Brand I’ve Loved For Years - P & Co
Throughout their growth from a small business to a business with a large and loyal following, their clothing, jewellery and accessories have only gotten better. I rarely buy clothes but every time these guys release a new collection, I pounce on it.
Here’s a quote from their site: “We believe that a desired outcome depends on your initial frame of mind. We want to create with purpose, we want to think with purpose and ultimately, we want to live with purpose.”
They have a new collection which launched on Friday 8th July. You can find it below.
Breathing Technique I’m Testing - Wim Hof
I first heard of Wim Hof via his ice plunge feats and started doing them myself which produced great results, so I thought I’d try his breathing techniques instead of meditating one day and it felt great. It follows a rhythm in which you are not taking very deep breaths, then there’s breath holds which produce tingling in your fingertips and a more noticeable heartbeat but after you’ve completed the ten minutes, you will definitely feel more awake.
Try the breathing technique below.
Documentary Series I’m Watching - Long Way Up
“Long Way Up is a British television series which debuted 18 September 2020, documenting a motorcycle journey undertaken in 2019 by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, from Ushuaia in Argentina through South and Central America to Los Angeles in the United States.”
I loved the previous two series Long Way Round and Long Way Down and this is just as good, if not better. Thenovelty of the new series is that theguys are undertaking this mammoth journey on electric motorcycles with electric pick-up trucks for the crew, so this brings with it mammoth challenges.
Watch Long Way Up on Apple TV below.
