Fundamental vs Objective Truths - Issue 27 - 18th September 2022
I want to touch on the difference between fundamental truths and objective truths. It’s easy to dismiss claims and stories as objectively false. People also enjoy using objectivity to seem more intelligent but the problem with only viewing the world through an objective lens is that a hell of a lot of meaningis hiding right outside that lens. To view the world objectively andfundamentally is to look below the surface of stories and gauge their significance from a moral standpoint rather than a purelylogical one. This allows for better interpretations.
Take the story of The Hobbit as I have spoken about previously. Of course, if we view this story through a objective lens, we (hopefully quickly) come to the conclusion that it is not based on actual events. However, we do get lost in the film, so much so that we lose ourselves in it. Our brains tell us that we are in amongst the film’s events. Why does this happen? Well if it’s a good story, it represents something ancient and meaningful within us as humans. We unconsciously recognise that the story is fundamentally true as it has happened again and again across time. Perhaps not in the manner that the film depicts but broadly the story has happened. Of course there never was elves, hobbits, orks etc. but the story of an unlikely hero ignoring what’s trying to hold him back and going on the adventure of a lifetime, overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles and returning a better individual? That story has been repeated for centuries. What must be understood concerning mythology, religion, stories & fiction is that they are fundamentally true.

The word ‘fundamental’ is defined as, roughly speaking, the formation of thenecessary core or base which is of central and vital importance. Thus, I am not saying that religious stories and myths are objectively true, just that they form the necessary core which is of vital importance to society and culture, therefore we should take them seriously. This idea came from Jordan Peterson, whom I went to see live last week. He spoke of this fundamentality in contrast with objectivity. This spoke to me deeply. As much as I have read and listened to many people like Peterson speak of the significance of religion, I still hadn’t found the deep meaning associated with their morals, however to say that the stories in the Bible are fundamentally true is to say that they reoccur again and again and again across time, we need only look for the symbolism within them. In order to find meaning and purpose we must learn to decipher when to utilise our objective mindset and our fundamental one, for not everything can be explained through objectivity.

TV Show I’m Re-Watching - Suits
I love this show for many reasons, one of which is it’s an easy watch after a stressful day. Another is it’s cool and punchy writing. However be warned, thequality does dip at around Season 5.
Watch Suits on Netflix now or watch a scene from Season 1 that explores themain plot line below.
New Album I’m Enjoying - How Will I Know If Heaven Will Find Me? - TheAmazons
I’ve been waiting for this album’s release for a while and it’s a solid one. It has a decent mix of tempos and experimental styles, that make it a great album. Rock ‘n’ Roll is not dead it seems.
Listen to the single Bloodrush below.
Protein Powder I’m Using - PhD Nutrition
I previously used MyProtein or Bulk for my protein powders however this, it seems, is a better alternative as it has 4 extra grams of protein in comparison to Bulk and it’s also very low on sugar and tastes great.
Check out PhD’s range of products below.
Film I Finally Watched - The Departed
I’d been meaning to watch this film for a long time and I finally watched it and it was defiantly worth the long wait. The plot follows an undercover cop and a mole in the police who attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston (4). Directed by Martin Scorsese with a very impressive cast including Leonardo Dicaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg, it is a very intense watch and classically Scorsese.
Watch the trailer below.
Quote to Ponder
A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be patched up to make it work. You have to start over, beginning with a working simple system - John Gall
